New beginnings, new pictures
Covid came, my dog died and my life changed, From his companionship in fields and hills to the isolation of lockdown , I still drew and painted but was less interested in landscapes, as I was walking outdoors so much less. I took some classes and rediscovered experimentation, exploring the materials again , new marks, new subjects and new processes.
Pond dreams of spring
Pond dreams of spring. Feb 2026 Acrylics on heavy paper. 57 X 76 cm work in progress. Another beginning and new direction exploring the limited palette and dark under painting. Intuitive additions and subtractions.

The Z hill, Somerset
The ‘Z’ hill, Somerset. 2025. Mixed media on heavy paper ,57 X 76 cm. From a fond memory of dog walks . Playing with a new painting toy, scrapers! I was enjoying the smoothness of painting with these ; loving the thinned layers.
Safe Place
‘Safe place ‘ 2025. Mixed media on heavy paper 57 X 76 cm. Childhood memories of upstate New York farmland with granite bedrock poking out here and there. Lichens, mosses and mini beasts to peer at and wonder about. Hot stone to lie on , on a warm summer day.
Tulips, almost gone
‘Tulips, almost gone’. 2025. Mixed media on paper. Could I paint a still life and flowers from memory? I had a go and really enjoyed the languid leaves and drooping flowers.
Landscapes and abstracts
A gallery of my abstract pictures and expressionist landscapes, all reflecting the atmospheres of the places that inspired them, such as the hills outside Bath, and the area where I now live and walk — the Wye valley in Herefordshire and the Monnow in Monmouthshire, with their surrounding hills, fields and woods.
March Winds
Early tree flowers, bright grass and fresh sheets flapping with sharp shadows. 56 X 72 cm
The Birch Grove
Is there a pheasant? Where is it? Autumn, cold skies and bright leaves, fluttering around my white dog’s hunting ground. 56X72 cm.
Winter Morning Glascwm Woods
Warm beams of light through bare trees, casting shadows and unexpected shapes. Framed 52 X 70.
August Shadows
A regular local amble, within the village of Llangrove. Looking northeasterly, the far hills catching later light. Dust kicking up at each step. It’s been a hot day, now a relief to stroll in the coming evening. FRAMED
Winter on the Wye
Following the river , beyond the overpass, alongside the potato fields. Such a cold day but muddy underfoot. My shoes become huge clarts, clotted with freezing earth.
Eye in the Forest
A move to Herefordshire and new landscapes to explore. The Forest of Dean in late autumn, avoiding boar in the woods! We find ponds and oaks, tall clusters of young trees, all reaching higher. SOLD
Tansy by the Wellow Brook
A favourite walk if no cows were in the footpath fields on the way. Breaking from the woods around the brook, cross the metal bridge and wow! Opposite side darkly wooded, but we stand on an open bank carpeted in cloth of gold. By late summer, grasses turned shiny and the tansy are platters for bees and a multitude of insects. SOLD
Fraser’s Poplars
An early morning in winter dreamscape. Slipping from warm duvet to just sunrise, frost pockets, dog trotting alongside, our breath visible in swirls, adding to the morning mistiness.
Hinton Fields
Massive hogweed stems at eye level . A sense of wonder at these mighty umbellifers against the backdrop of hills , later afternoon sun pouring honeyed warmth in colour and temperature over us. SOLD
Windbreak walk Hinton Charterhouse
From a walk my dog and I often did, a loop from HC to Norton Barn and back. The autumnal colours, shapes of leaves , breeze and brightness outside the enclosure of the windbreak between two large arable fields created a sense of energetic excitement with a change a- coming on as we passed through it to the stile at the end. FRAMED
Heat Haze Rock Pile
Done on a painting week in Tarn region of France- wonderful in itself- my first big picture, almost abstract, painted in the rich hot colours of July/ August near Cordes sur Ciel. SOLD
Alders by the Wellow Brook
Later in winter, the purplish catkins of the alders dangle thickly from these river loving trees. H76 x W56, FRAMED
Ferns on Slutty Brook
Sparkling in the morning light, after rain. We nose our way along, getting occasionally drenched from overhead branches. Acrylics on wood panel. H53 x W43
Snow in the Woods
We are the first footsteps to break the smoothness of this morning. Early light gleams yellow, colouring all around.
Tansy on the Wye
A favourite flower of mine, aromatic foliage and the golden plate of pollen and nectar, held aloft. SOLD
Rooks in the Straw
After the harvest, the birds come to feast. Watercolour. Acrylic and collage. H26 x W35
Peregrine Path October
Walking along the Wye, looking up at Doward and the view points there, these trees shone at me.
Bluebells Ganarew
Heading up towards the hill fort on Little Doward, one of our favourite places. It’s a look out over the Wye valley, a place of steep slopes, huge ancient beeches and gargoyle oaks. It took several attempts to get this picture how I wanted it. Additional paper and card have been added plus coloured charcoals and graphite to the under painting with acrylics.
Slutty Brook and Hazel
Summer evening , sweet light, spilt bright across the trunks, leaves deepening the shadows. 38x56cm. Collage. SOLD
Slutty Brook Late Winter
Woods again, from a different angle. The comes and goes stream has filled its bed and flows fast. Early light, yellow tinged, clears the way. FRAMED
Glascwm Woods Autumn
The glint of the last hazel leaves , bracken browned and crisping, slurping mud underfoot as we slip along the path together. Will there be a pheasant in the thicket?
Glascwm Woods Spring
Cold winds but a warming brightening sunshine makes us both frisky and pleased to be out in the woods this morning
Glascwm Woods August
Dusty, stream bed dried, grasses browned and leaves crisping. Still some welcoming coolness under the trees. FRAMED
Glascwm Woods Winter
Our early morning walk, sniffing in the light snow fall, sharp air full of breeze and smells for a dog to enjoy. Almost a monochrome
Glascwm Woods Summer
Sparkling light filtered by leaves, joyous birdsong , thankful for coolness in the depths of the glade.
Sisters
Two ash trees in a hedgerow, picked out so well by the flowering mustard rape behind them. Llangrove north side has a very different aspect than the south of this village on a ridge. FRAMED
In the cool
A picture from France, a very hot afternoon near Cordes sur Ciel. The stream just more than a trickle, and harsh light on the bark of a big tree next to the old stone bridge, where I stood, enjoying the moist coolness and shade. H76 x W56
Coast path to Seaton
I love going to the sea and walking the coast path. In this cavern of firs, the striped shadows of their trunks led my eye to the opening beyond, to a new horizon. H76 x W56
Weatherfront
Looking over the gate, a bank of cloud rises over the trees. But what weather will these clouds bring? FRAMED
Over the Gate
The long shadows really appeal to me and the contrast of dark and streaks of light. Bracken and brambles furnish the sides of the gate with dark leaves and crisp textures. Shall we pass? FRAMED
Bluebells Bank
On the way into the woods, a raised bank covered in bluebells, smelling sweetly. Dog leaps up for a good sniff. Acrylics SOLD
Towards the Malverns
Cold winter day out walking. Hedgerows and a ploughed field on the north side of the village with Misty Malvern in the distance, the hedges sparkling with frost crystals.
Sunstripe on the Monnow
A regular walk with my dog, affording river play and socialising with other dogs and their people. SOLD
Birch Glade
A Forest picture, walking to Parkend from Coleford one bright cold day in late autumn. This stand of birch, dappled sunlight in the bracken, textures of the bark, caught my attention. And the cold brilliant sky shone down on us. SOLD
Oakley’s Pond Llangrove
Late autumn at a favourite spot. Not yet frozen. Will he swim or just drink? Acrylic and crayons on heavy paper
